Residential Registry Office in Basel
The Residential Registry Office in Basel is your first point of contact after moving to Basel.
Every citizen in Basel is required to go to the Residential Registry Office and should do so within the first 14 days. It regulates residence and settlement conditions in the canton. This means that if you have just moved to Basel from another city, in or out of Basel, you must visit the Residential Registry Office in Basel. You should bring the following documents with you for registration or re-registration:
- Application form
- Certificate of de-registration (if you last lived in a Swiss municipality)
- Certificate of origin
- If you have children, the family booklet or family card.

Office for Migration in Basel
If you have just moved to Switzerland and Basel, you are obliged to visit the Office for Migration. If you have the permission to stay in Switzerland, a foreigner’s permit will be issued here. If you already have a foreigner’s permit, it is sufficient to go to the Residential Registry Office first. They are in contact with the migration office and will inform them about your move. Vehicles must also be re-registered when moving. You can go by directly, but it is also possible to send in the documents by post.

When moving within Basel-Stadt, you will need the following documents:

Parking space reservation in Basel
If you want to reserve a parking space for your move in Basel, this will cost you CHF 5, plus a deposit of CHF 20 for the sign. You can apply for the parking prohibition signs at any police station in Basel. Please note the opening hours of the respective police station for the issuance and return of the parking prohibition signs. It is also important that you meet the deadline of 48 hours before the moving date for applying for a no-parking zone.
